- - - - Riis was a major player in the muckraking and yellow journalism boom of the Industrial Revolution. He wrote and exposed uncomfortable topics, such as the tenements in New York City, so overcrowded with people that it was nearly impossible to know how many lived in one house or apartment.
    - - Alger was an author that coined the 'rags-to-riches' tropes with stories like Ragged Dick and Sink or Swim. He strongly hoped for young boys to look up to his relatable characters and earn their wealth with hard work and high moral standards.

    - - This quote describes the belief of Puritans. God did not intervene in your life. The idea of 'elect' and 'non-elect' is very prevalent here, as God makes the decisions, regardless of someone's role in life, what they choose to do, etc.
    - - As a main actor in the Great Awakening, this quote is a direct accusation of people that stopped going to church. He is warning us that those who don't go to church will quickly see hell.
- - - - As a main spokesperson for the betterment of African Americans, Booker T Washington cements his place in history with his iconic Atlan Compromise Speech in 1895, which advocated for African Americans to be accepted into polite society to an audience of mostly white people.
    - - W.E.B. Du Bois was another influential African American spokesperson and sociologist. His Talented Tenth idea conveyed the importance of education for the African American race in order to become more influential in the world.
    - - As one of the most well-known faces of the civil rights movement in America, Martin Luther King Jr. argues for justice and equality in a segregated United States. He attempts to evoke emotion with descriptive paragraphs and words, the description of murders committed for no reason other than 'I'm white and you're black'.
  - - - Philanthropist and millionaire, Andrew Carnegie represents the true American dream as an immigrant. He earned his wealth in the steel industry and then gave it away in order to better the society. While he believed in the proper distribution of wealth, he didn't give directly to the poor but rather to programs and other such things that allocated the funds for them.
