Law
A Model of Christian Charity:
"3 Reason. Thirdly, that every man might have need of others, and from hence they might be all knit more nearly together in the bonds of brotherly affection. From hence it appears plainly that no man is made more honorable than another or more wealthy etc.," -John Winthrop
Winthrop wants to explain that at the end of the day, we need each other. He explains that affection is the core of the human experience and wealth and honor cannot come between that. I think this quote is important because it is a great example of how mankind only survives off the relationships we have with one another. We tend to forget this and so it leads us down a path of loneliness and regret. I feel like Winthrop explains it in a way that is simple but also powerful.
Government
Declaration of Independence: " We hold all these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the creator with certain unalible rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
-
Phyllis Wheatley, “To His Excellency General Washington”:** "And so you may, whoever dares disgrace the land of freedoms heaven defended race! Fixed are the eyes of the nation on the scales, for in their hopes in Columbia's arms prevails."
God
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God: "Your guilt in the mean time is constantly increasing, and you are every day treasuring up more wrath; the waters are continually rising, and waxing more and more mighty; and there is nothing but the mere pleasure of God that holds the waters back." -John Edwards
God is used to increase fear in people by comparing him to nature. the fear of god is what is used to keep people in their place and obey God's laws
The Examination of Mrs. Anne Hutchinson at the Court Newton : “How did Abraham know that it was God that bid him offer his son, being a breach of the sixth commandment?” - Anne Hutchinson.
In this quote Hutchinson questions the court's knowledge of God and the Bible which only lead to Anne being banished since the use of God was present.
Idealism
Wealth
Anti wealth
“The Gospel of Wealth”: “It is a waste of time to criticize the inevitable.” - Andrew Carnegie
In this quote, it is clear that Carnegie believes that fighting for change on things that will never happen is a waste of time. Carnegie is talking about the distribution of wealth and how there will always be people who are wealthy and thinking that there won’s be is a waste of thought. He believes that inequality exists and all that remains is how the wealthy use their money and power. No matter what, wealthy people will always exist and at that point there is not much we can do but rely on them to help others.
-
“Such, in my opinion, is the true gospel concerning wealth, obedience to which is destined some day to solve the problem of the rich and the poor…” - Andrew Carnegie
rich people are responsible for spending their money on poor people to create a better community and narrowing down the gap between rich and poor. He argues that rich people have this responsibility because they are the best people to judge how to help society and he believes that their wealth belongs to society. This quote is important because he is informing people how to reduce economic inequality and what wealthy people should do in order to solve this inequality.
“It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess and it was an age of satire.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, Echoes of the Jazz Age:.
I feel that this quote emphasizes how important the Jazz Age was to the people of that time and for us today. It promoted so much change and growth that still affects the way we live and think today. This was a time in America where more was better and I feel like that vibe has been brought into the way we live now as well, showing that America will always favor an excess of materials.
“Dr. Dewey said that the deepest urge in human nature is “the desire to be important". -Dale Carnegie
shows how much in society that the best way to get the public eyes on you is through some sort of attraction or desire, an example could be selling something in a way that people can best relate to. Americans value the idea of being important and doing something important. It is what drives us to be the best.
individuals
“Let’s unite on behalf of America and win our independence. WHEREFORE, instead of gazing at each other with suspicious or doubtful curiosity, let each of us hold out to his neighbor the hearty hand of friendship, and unite in drawing a line, which, like an act of oblivion, shall bury in forgetfulness every former dissention.” -Thomas Paine
America was built off of relation ships and friendships. We do not succeed if we do not have the support of one another.
"For, be it remembered, these children with the training they receive--or do not receive--with the instincts they inherit and absorb in their growing up, are to be our future rulers, if our theory of government is worth anything.”
-Jacob Riis
How the Other Half Lives
Children are going to grow up to be our future. They are a product of our environment and the way we raise them with affect the way our world grows and works in the future.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wall-Paper” (1892)
"I don’t like to look out of the windows even—there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast. I wonder if they all come out of that wallpaper as I did?"
Her staring at the trapped women in the wallpaper is a metaphor for the long history of women who have been silenced and imprisoned in their homes by the wishes of men, and even just voices. For Gilman she opens the question of if every women has gone through the same hurt she has.
“What can you say, when a man asks you to dance with him? I most certainly will not dance with you, I'll see you in hell first.”- Dorthy Parker
This quote shows women strength and independence during a time where women were disrespected and treated as nothing. This shows that woman are capable of their own decisions.
“We are people who normally would not mix. But there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness, and an understanding which is indescribably wonderful.” - Alcoholics Anonymous, “There is a Solution”
I chose this quote because I love the idea of America being separate but coming together in times of need. I see this quote showing the side of America that has been seen for centuries. People of all backgrounds coming together to help and be there for one anotherthe concept of people coming together in America has been a theme since the beginning. When I read this quote I was reminded a lot of Thomas Paines “Common sense” and him talking about the goodness of people coming together.
“It is furthermore the cult of individuality and personal branding that grow out of such platforms and affect the way we think about our offline selves and the places where we actually live.”
-Jenny O’Dell, "Surviving Usefulness"
This quote is important because it really reflects the way our society acts today. Your personal brand and look on social media revolves around your life and can affect the way you make your everyday decisions. Many times the actions we make are a result of social media and it can take away the part of us that makes us unique. This is a good quote to explain how social media and technology in the U.S. is a growing thing that will always be present in our lives.
