- - - - Frederick Douglas was born and raised a slave. One day he escaped and started a new life. He became a great writer after learning to read and write. Many people were shocked even though, if a black man is taught the same information as a white man, his capabilities are the same. Douglas went from being a slave to escaping by himself and becoming a well known writer.
  - - - Franklin went from rags to riches. He was born poor but decided he wanted to change. He was a self made man who gave all the credit to himself.
  - - - Carnegie started as an immigrant. With his determination and hard work, he became a very wealthy and important man. He went from rags to riches and is a self-made man.
  - - - Du Bois believed that African Americans needed to choose the elite of their race to succeed and bring up the social status of his race.
  - - - This quote is saying that people in today's society are always busy. People don't have a lot of free time and are always trying to improve their lives instead of relaxing for a bit.

        Mary Rowlandson is saying that God is helping an guiding her through her life and her trials and tribulations

        Rubio Is referring that God is helping lead him where God wants him to go. He prayed for help and knowledge and was lead to run for office.
- - - - Paine want everyone to come together and forget about their disagreements for a period of time. The people needed to be united in order to claim independence and become their own country
  - - - Rubio is announcing that he will be running for president. In the process he says that he wants to serve her best. In this case, "her" is referring to the United States. He wants to do whatever is best for the country.

        Thoreau was so passionate about anti slavery that he didn't pay taxes to the government. He was eventually put in jail. His beliefs were so strong that he was willing to go to jail over them.
    - - I plead not for his life, but for his character,--his immortal life; and so it becomes your cause wholly, and is not his in the least.
        
        Thoreau is saying that John Brown had great character. He was wiling to stand up for slaves to the point of death. He was a proud abolitionist. He died one and is remembered as one. His tactics weren't very peaceful, but he made his point clear.
  - - - Roosevelt was all about raising boys well and preparing them for the future. He wanted American boys to be good boys for the purpose of the future of America.

        Anne Hutchison was very passionate about her religion, faith, and spirituality. She was so devoted that she was willing to break the law in order to spread her good news.
    - - "200 dead, 60 whites" (Fusco, Week 5)
        
        Nat Turner was a slave who broke free and started a very deadly rebellion. There were whites and blacks killed in the process. He was so devoted to being an abolitionist that his intrusive thoughts got the best of him. He was killed for the rebellion. Many people saw him as a hero for his brave acts against slavery.
    - - "While confined here in the Birmingham City Jail, I came across your recent statement calling our present activities “unwise and untimely.” (King Jr.)
        
        Martin Luther King Jr. was advocating for a great cause. However, the way he approached things got him put in jail. This was intentional to prove a point, however his actions were still illegal.

        Dick was poor but had the mindset that he could work his way out of it. He worked hard for his money and had the mindset to become wealthy

        Jacob Riis believes that the way you are raised and people you grow up around shape your future. He isn't with the idea that people can work their way out of a hole and create their own identity.
- - - - This quote is talking about the partying and drinking that went on in the 1920's. It talks about older people feeling like their younger selves and the younger generation when they drink. They feel like they fit in when they are drunk and in the midst of a party.
  - - - Martin is talking about the new suburbia houses. Lots of military families were introduced to a new source of money. This allowed them to move into the new suburbs.
  - - - Lewis is talking about a bunch of new skyscrapers being in the city. These new buildings are due to new wealth and big companies having a lot of employees to run their big businesses.
