sound
non - diegetic nostalgic soundtrack used contrapuntally = eclectic - frequent use of Country & Western / skiffle / blues / nostalgic songs ( e.g Buddy Holly's 'Everyday') - often juxtaposed with disturbing on - screen events
-
-
-
diegetic soundscape - represents Suburban America - bouncing ball / sprinklers etc - also extracts of phonecall to Eva re the shooting / her attempts to phone Franklin = enigma codes
opening / closing song = 'Mother's Last Words To Her Son'( Washington Phillips gospel song) = about man reflecting on mother's advice to trust in Jesus once out in the world = ironic-"You are leaving, my darling boy. You always have been your mother's joy."

-
diegetic sound taken from one sequence in film and used non diegetic ally in another, often foreshadowing events- ‘pick up the phone’
uses existing individual, often classic, songs in contrapuntal way = disconnect between songs and action
non diegetic music often upbeat / positive in pace, pitch, tone and lyrics e.g Buddy Holly song = contrasts starkly with darkness of action

performance
-
Birth scene – mid shot of Eva holding Kevin at arm's length while he's crying.
When they move into the new home, Kevin and Eva are both sat on the floor away from each other, share a glance.
Kevin and Eva finally hug during the ending at the prison, almost comforting him.
-
eating lychee, killing the hamster, eating dinner before going out, painting her room.
-
In the school sports hall, Kevin raises his hands in a crucifix pose – similar to Eva's pose at the tomato festival.
Eva slaps Kevin's hand and breaks his arm - the only times Kevin really listens to her, she disciplines him.
Eva's reactions to children: terrified in the car of the children trick or treating, avoids eye contact with the other pregnant mums, freezes when the child ballerinas come running down the hallway.
-
cinematography
-
Lots of arial shot of the Tomatina festival , close ups on red used to create motif
-
Slow zoom on the curtains foreshadows , also creates tension conventional thriller cinematography
-
Eva is show as unreliable through how we perceive her povs e.g. her driving on Halloween and all the static shots of people looking at her
Eva and Kevin framed at a distance when Kevin is a child through a static shot of them Infront of the white window
Her being shot through the lights mirror while giving birth show her feeling like she's losing her identity
Always shot at eye level creates no underlying dynamics show they both have leverage between each other
-
costume
costume is essential to the colour of the film, for both kevin, franklin and eva , they all continue to wear primary colours and black and white , further emphasising there prominence.
-
it also shows how the one thing that Kevin carries out through the films are his shirts he wears them from childhood showing how he’s still playing into the idea that childhood = innocence (he used his age to get out of a larger prison sentence)
Eva wears sunglasses when trying to apply for her job at travel r us showing how after Kevins massacre she was trying to hide herself ;
she then takes these off after she got the job, forgetting her guilt and shame, straight after this she then gets slapped by one of the family members of the people Kevin shot
White linen shirt which Eva and Kevin Share through some of the most influential scenes, they both wear it when Kevin is being arrested
We only see Kevin not wearing a primary colour when he is in his robin hood costume , showing once again how important colour is in the film
wnttak ideology
context
-films are characterised by a distinctive impressionistic, poetic and atmospheric visual and audio style
tends to make use of relatively limited dialogue and an enigmatic, ambiguous approach to narrative and character
-challenging themes such as death, grief, social isolation and a search for meaning in a hostile world.
-tends to write and direct her own films and is credited as producer and/or cinematographer on many of them demonstrating importance she places on maintaining creative control
Patriarchal ideology is idea that men have more power, dominance, and privilege than women. Patriarchy is a social system in which men are thought to hold positions of power in both public and private sphere. Women are in less privileged positions and are oppressed by patriarchal society.
POST FEMINIST IDEOLOGY - Celebrates sexuality - says that women can be more empowered, free to choose and liberated moving beyond / rejecting some of ideas of feminism as out of date a shift from ‘women's lib’ to ‘girl power’ characterized by (essentialist) emphasis on femininity ‘the career woman’ feminist notion of women as passive victims of patriarchy is rejected
existentialism is the idea that humans beings have freedom and autonomy to create their own sense of meaning in life and that an essential part of leading a meaningful life is the exercising of the individuals own free will, this can be found in the binary opposite of freedom vs entrapment that is first introduced when Eva is leaving the prison , where Eva is walking through a white corridor and a inmate who had escaped what being restrained , the diegetic sound of prison guards saying ‘don’t fight’ then slowly fades into a midwife telling Eva not to fight while giving birth to Kevin Eva is framed through a reflection on a piece of medical equipment , showing how through the birth of Kevin Eva lost her autonomy and became imprisoned in mother hood.
Functionalism is the rhetoric that society is held together by a social consensus, in which members of society agree upon and work together to achieve what is best for society as a whole, this leads to people having roles which introduces the next binary opposite, Eva vs motherhood, through the theory of mommy mystique it is expected of Eva to want to be a mother to throw herself fully into the role however it is shown that she resents the idea of motherhood , while Kevin is a baby we see Eva's inability to connect with Kevin for example
Mommy mystique - an idealised view of motherhood that holds that women are uniquely suited to raise children. It supposes that all women want to be mothers and that motherhood is the ultimate fulfilment of a woman’s life
Individualism-Individualists promote the exercise of one's goals and desires and to value independence and self-reliance and advocate that interests of the individual should achieve precedence over the state or a social group while opposing external interference upon one's own interests by society- Eva post Kevin shooting , Kevin throughout the film
That the ‘American dream can be what is perceive but not necessarily what's going on , e.g. the nuclear family the mega mansion the well paying jobs was contradicted by the fact Kevin was a mass murderer and that both Kevin and Eva in the film had something wrong with them. The film tries to contradict the idea of the American dream which suggests that you will prosper through hard work and financial gain In order to build a family unit to instil American ideals and values into, in WNTTAK the title character Kevin is seen to be raised by two affluent parents with careers which lead them to prosper in the American economy, The idea of the American dream’s central family unit is torn apart through Kevin, Kevin is seen to be anti establishment a sentiment that carries throughout his entire character arc. He goes against societal rules and expectations at even small levels like the outgrown clothes he wears never fitting him quite right which extends into broader aspects of him such as the Savage brutal nature of the school shooting.
