Step 4: Writing the IEP
Have assigned case member
Case member is responsible for making sure IEP is implemented properly
gives access to free appropriate learning
considered everyone concerns and child's strengths
Includes: level of functioning, strengths, weaknesses, abilities, areas of eligibility, annual goals, objectives, common core standards, DIS services, program placement, accommodations transition plans
Step 5: Meeting
Private location and plenty of time
Keep information confidential
copy of procedure safeguards
share any concerns
keep students best interest in mind
Step 3: Elegibility
IEP team has the flexibility to determine if the student qualifies for the IEP
If student disability is too severe, the IEP team will suggest special education services
Eligibility is bound by IDEA but no set in stone rules
If child performance is not hindered by disability, they could not qualify
Step 2: Evaluation
13 types of disabilities
if primary language is not english, evaluation is done in primary language
measure areas of cognition, academics, languages, and social and emotional developments
include any records and work samples from students
Step 1: Referral
IDEA mandates that the school must conduct an evaluation
Can come from parent, teacher, or school staff
Parent consent must be acquired in order to conduct evaluation
