- - - - they produce food for the plant, they help to theplant to "breathe", to exchange gases with the atmosphere.
        
        most leaves have two parts: the petiole ant the blade. the blade is the flat part of the leaf. the petiole connects the blade to the plant's stem. veins in the blade support the leaf and carry water and minerals. on the back of the blade,they are tiny holes, called stomata. the stomata allow gases to enter and exit the leaf. the plant makes its own food in the leaves, leaves contain clorophill, a green substance wich is necessary for photosintesis. clorophill gives leaves their green colour.
        
        stem:
        
        it keeps the plant standing up. it can be woody (rigid) or herbaceous (soft). plants with a woody stem include roses, hibiscus and mango trees. tulips, orchids and sunflowers have a herbaceous stem.
        
        roots:
        
        they absorb water and minerals from the soil wich the plant needs for nutrition. most of the water and minerals travel up the roots throught tiny root hairs.
