the day in Marseille
The boys finally arrive in Marseille. Since their train isn't until the evening, they decide to relax and enjoy themselves in the city.
They discover the sea for the first time, and are astonished by its beauty. They wander about the city and go to the cinema.
At the station in Marseille, Jo manages to deal with a situation with the police alone without Maurice's help, by telling believable excuses. At this point, we can really see Jo's development, as he is much less dependent on his brother and can manage well by himself.
The boys board the train, and head to Menton to meet Albert and Henri
Menton
Once in Menton, Jo and Maurice meet their brothers in their hairdressers, and they can finally relax.
The boys spend their days in Menton exploring the town, and playing football on the beach. Jo meets a boy called Virgilio, and they play jacks together.
After a while, the boys become bored of wandering around the town, and want to find jobs. Jo recognises that he enjoys getting by in the adult world instead of going to school, and wants to earn some money.
Virgilio tells Jo that he used to work at the Viale family farm. Jo goes to the farm, and works there for around 10 days. He enjoys his time there, hidden away in the mountains and forgetting the worries of the war.
Nice
The four brothers reunite with their parents in Nice, and everything seems to be going well for the family, spending around a year there
While Henri and Albert work in the salon in Nice, Joseph and Maurice become friends with Italian soldiers
-
Unfortunately, this atmosphere changes during September. Italy, originally allied with the Germans, had signed an armistice with America. Little by little, the Italian soldiers disappear from Nice, and are replaced by SS soldiers and the Gestapo.
