    - - suffered a reverse over religious reforms when six articles were published in 1539
      - his enemies at court made good use of the collapse of the cleves marriage in 1540
      - henry grew a desire for catherine howard who was duke of norfolk's niece who cromwell hated
      - norfolk suggested to henry that cromwell was protecting a group of protestants in calais
    - - 1539-40 protestant alliance and cleves marriage created suspicion that cromwell was pursuing his own interest rather than the king's
      - henry was embarrassed by the marriage and created a desire to punish cromwell
      - cromwell was then executed after charges of introducing further protestant changes and failing to enforce 6 articles
      - executed on 28th july 1540 - same day that henry married catherine howard
