The Assiniboia region was organised by the interim administration in March 1870. A judicial code was accepted in April. The Canadian government recognised the "rights" of the residents along the Red River during discussions in Ottawa that April. Red River ultimately prevailed, but only barely. On May 12, 1867, the province of Manitoba was established by the Manitoba Act. In contrast to the expansive North West, which the Canadian government would soon acquire, its area was severely confined. Even inside Manitoba, public lands remained under the control of the federal government. 607,000 hectares were set aside for Métis children, and land titles for Métis people were guaranteed. The federal administrations that followed, though, botched these agreements.
