Liver Anatomy and Blood Supply
Hepatic Portal Vein
Content
Deoxygenated blood
Function
Transports low oxygen blood from the liver back to the hear
Hepatic Portal Vein
Content
The deoxygenated blood carries nutrients and toxins from the intestine
Functions:
Sends nutrient-rich blood to from the gut to the liver
Hepatic Artery
Functions
Send oxygenated blood to the liver that is used to sustain liver cells
Content
Oxygenated Blood from the lungs
The dual blood supply to liver allows the liver to have enough blood supply. Furthermore, it allows both nutrients and oxygen to be supplied to the liver
Sinusoids
Sinusoids are the capillaries in the liver. Both the nutrients and oxygen flow through here. Exchange between the hepatocytes happen. The Kupffer cell breaks down hemeglobin from older red blood cells recycling cell components
Sinusoids are wider than capillaries.
There are gap between the endothelial cell in the sinusoids for large molecule to be able to exchange
Sinusoids contain Kupffer cell for breaking down of hemoglobin
