Hard engineering
Groynes: work with natural processes, increases tourist potential with practicality, not too expensive, starve beaches further down, unnatural and unattractive.
Sea walls: effective prevention of erosion, promenade for pedestrians, reflects ave energy other than absorbing it, can be intrusive and ugly, very expensive.
Rock armour: cheap and easy, recreational use, dangerous, very intrusive, can look out of place with local geology.

Costs of defences are justified by the potential expense of replacing of replacing sea-damaged buildings and infrastructure if they were not in place.
Cliff fixing: driving iron bars into the cliff face, both to stabilise it and to absorb some wave power.
