DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE - involves treating someone unfairly or less favourably compared to others. Discriminatory practice can take many forms, such as excluding someone from activities, or verbal or physical abuse.
DIRECT DISCRIMINATION - intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences.
INDIRECT DISCRIMINATION - when a policy, practice or rule applies to everybody but it has a detrimental effect on some people. The discrimination is accidental or unintentional.
PREJUDICE - when someone has a negative attitude towards, or unfair dislike of, an individual or a group of people. Often based on ill-formed opinion or on inaccurate information. Examples include racial prejudice or punishment of people because of their sexual orientation.
STEREOTYPING - making judgements about individuals or groups of people based on prejudices. It means making unfair assumptions that people with certain characteristics are the same. For example - girls are better behaved than boys or midwives are always women.
LABELLING - to identify people negatively as part of a particular group. The assumption is that there all the same. For example, all old people are frail and need to be looked after.
BULLYING - a range of negative behaviours that can intimidate or harm individuals. It can involve humiliating, insulting or harassing someone by constantly criticising them, making inappropriate comments or repeating offensive jokes and nicknames.
