FIBER OPTIC
Application
Communication System
- transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of infrared light through an optical fiber
- advantages : improving cloud-connectivity, voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities ,bigger bandwidth and Higher Resistance.
- used by telecommunications companies to transmit telephone signals, Internet communication and cable television signals.
Medicine
- Example : the imaging and illumination components of endoscopes.
- advantage : allows for less pain during operations, faster recovery time and lower risk of infection for the patient.
-common usage of fiber optics in medicine is for biomedical sensors. These sensors can be used internally and externally and can measure a wide variety of different things within the human body.
Sensors
- Example: Intensity-based sensors and evanescent wave sensor
- sensor emits, receives, and converts the light energy into electrical signal.
- advantages : High sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, light weight, flexibility, ability to provide multiplexed or distributed sensing
- to measure strain, temperature, pressure and other quantities by modifying a fiber so that the quantity to be measured modulates the intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength or transit time of light in the fiber.
Military
- Example: Hydrophones for SONARs and seismic application
- advantages : transmit much more information in less time over longer distances
- used in avionics and mission controls systems for high-speed data transfer for applications such as mission data, flight planning data, and sensor data fusion for weapon systems.
Electronics
- used to transmit high-definition television signals which have greater bandwidth and speed.
- advantages : Resists most corrosive elements , cheaper, diffivult to splice
- used in avionics and mission controls systems for high-speed data transfer for applications such as mission data, flight planning data, and sensor data fusion for weapon systems.
