experimental design
lab
adv: controlled, extraneous variables unlikely to influence
dis: highly controlled, so low mundane realism and eco validity, more likely to be demand characteristics, pp will not act in naturalistic behaviour
field
adv: can see naturalistic behaviour, high eco validity and possibly mundane realism
dis: cannot control extraneous variables (other variables may affect their behaviour rather than themselves)
interview
unstructured and semi
advantages: you can create a relationship with the pp, which makes them more likely to reveal certain parts they usually would not, less likely to be socially desirable, makes results more valid
disadvantages: lose sight of prior aim of study (in thematic analysis too many themes), can be influenced by researcher imposition and unconscious bias, decreases validity
structured
disadvantages: pp's less likely to open up as they do not feel comfortable with the interview, especially about spef topics that may make pp's more likely to be socially desirable
advantages: can not be swayed by researcher imposition, which increases validity, there is no relationship made that can deter results
