Theories of the family
believe society is based on value consensus- a shared set of norms &values which society socialises its members = ACHEIVES HARMONY
MURDOCK: 4 MAIN FUNCTIONS :
1) reproduction ( next gen needed 4 society 2 continue)
2) socialisation of the young into correct norms & values
3) meeting its members economic needs (food, shelter)
4) sexual satisfaction with the same partner preventing the social disruption by a sexual 'free-for-all'
PARSONS 1955- updates Murdock and said there are 2 irreducible functions of the family
- PRIMARY SOCIALISATION: children taught norms & values not just of society, but their specific family and culture.
- STABILISATION OF ADULT PERSONALITIES: provides emotional su[port to members so stops them from acting in dysfunctional ways when stressed. warm bath theory- family should be a place where the stresses of the day can be let go of
According to Parsons the functions of the family depend on the society in which its found:
pre-industrialistation= extended family
post-industrialisation= nuclear family(geographically mobile)
- families have to adapt to meet needs of society
A03 WILLMOTT & YOUNG: pre-industrial family = nuclear, with parents & children working together.
extended family has not disappeared as it still performs important functions eg emotional support, childcare & financial help
AO3- argued that these functions can be performed equally by other institutions or non-nuclear family structures. Marxists & feminists reject rose tinted view , it neglects conflict and exploitation.
