Gender
The number of Heads that are male in the set pages - The lack of inclusion of female bosses in the interview might reflect the context that women are less likely to be hired for managerial jobs
represents men in positions of power and status
The set pages are dominated by by men
this could be because the wrtiers of the Big issue are primarily male, and so are the readers
may also reflect the fact that men are more likely to be made homeless than women, so their focus might be on creating positive role models for men
Men
in the double spread pages we made history interview of the two founder's of Big issue -
The use masculine and powerful aggressive adjectives creates a macho image of the founders. obviously the magazine is going t create strong representations of its own founders!
Adds tot he stereotype that men are emotionally detached, mentally tough and non-nonsense
multiple images of men in positions of aggressive power e.g. film heroes and villains
The Article creates the idea of these men being unlimited roles models and the top in their field
The Women in this article are not described in such an idealised and revered way
Grayson Perry
The representation of Grayson Perry is counter typical as it shows a man comfortable with expressing his more feminine and creative side by wearing dresses and make up.
Comparisons to David Bowie
So this adds a more modern and diverse representations of masculinity that is often not seen in the mainstream media products
The article discusses his more typically masculine past e.g. watching was films, joining the army cadets, having temper etc.
This makes the representation masculinity quite complex and not one dimensional
Women
At the the time Theresa May was Prime minister, so along with Nicola Sturgeon this article shows women in some very senior positions of political power
Some articles reprsent women as educated and respected in their field providing a countertype to many mainstream representations of women
The Turn2Us pensions advert creates a more stereotypical representation of women being financially dependent on their husbands
As an 'alternative' magazine it makes sense that they do include some articles that challenge traditional stereotypes of gender, sexuality etc.
Typical readers of The Big issue are more likely to be left eying, and have liberal , alternative magazine to include these representations on their pages
