6 R's sustainability
-
Refuse - Consumers might not buy product if it is not environmental friendly. Where will it be made and what are the conditions for workers? Consumers choice
-
-
Rethink - Is there a better way of making this that is less harmful to the environment? Can it be simplified?
Reuse - Can any part be used if it is no longer needed? Can it be used for something else if the primary use is no longer required?
-
Mechanism and Motion
Oscillating motion - movement back ad forth in a circular path (electric toothbrush head, pendulum)
Reciprocating motion - movement back and forth in a straight line (a needle on a sewing machine, jigsaw blade)
Linear motion - movement in a straight line (cars, conveyor belts)
Rotary motion - movement in a circular path (wheels, elctric motors)
Scales of production
One-off production - Only one, unique product is produced. High quality material is used. Must be a highly skilled worker. Usually very time consuming and expensive.(wedding dresses, cakes, jewellery)
Batch production - Number of identical products produced. Less skilled workers required. (bread, furniture)
Mass production - Large quantity of identical products produced. Special machinery is used to increase consistency, accuracy and speed of production. An unskilled specialist workforce is needed. (canned food, chocolate bars, cars)
Continuous production - Identical products being constantly made due to high demands. Made 24/7. Need highly specialised equipment and expensive CAM. Process does not require a lot of workers as it is almost fully automate.
Materials
Woods, metals, manufactured boards and polymers
Wood
Soft wood -
- takes around 10-30 years to grow
- shallow roots
- Pine and cedar
Hard wood -
- takes around 100 years
- deeper roots
- Oak, mahogany
Manufactured boards
Plywood, chipboard, -bi-axial
Polymers
Thermoplastic - heat, soft, mould, cool harden, reheat
-
Thermosetting - Heat (exothermic), mould, cool, harden and burn
-
-
Smart Materials
- That will change in some way when they have a external stimuli put on them. Such as, temperature, light, pressure or electrical input.
- changes in colour, shape or resistance
-
Thermochromic - changes colour when it is heated, e.g spoons, cups
-
-
-
-
Flatpack furniture - Ikea, B&Q, furniture build all by yourself
positives - good for environment, allows you to personalise your interior
Negatives - not very strong, not made of solid wood so won't last for as long
-
