What do you notice about the brass and woodwind instruments being played?
As in the Baroque period, brass instruments were limited in the range of notes they could produce to what is called the harmonic series.
This is the range of notes available simply by adjusting the tension on the player’s lips.
vOther notes were available for the horn players: by ‘stopping’ the sounding length of the instrument by inserting the hand into it’s bell.
Unfortunately, this technique affected the timbre of the instrument. This didn’t stop Mozart writing 4 Horn Concertos
One of the main difference between the Baroque Era and the Classical Era was that the Orchestra grew in size as more instruments were added. What instruments have been added?
In the Classical orchestra, the continuo (cello/bass), was gradually replaced by horns with trumpets, oboes and bassoons adding harmonies.
Flutes and clarinets were added to the woodwind section and the timpani featured more regularly
