Raising Awareness
Solution
-
Facts
Approximately 2 billion t-shirts are sold every year (MCC, 2016).
A T-shirt makes an average of 3,400 impressions (Siddiqui, 2022).
Implications/Effects
By raising awareness about this issue, more people would be educated and encouraged to participate in action to make a change (Youth Do It, 2023).
Raising awareness increases enthusiasm and support, stimulates action and spreads knowledge (European Commission, 2022).

Deforestation
UN SDGs
13 - Climate Action: The problem of deforestation can be linked to the UN SDG of Climate Action because the large amounts of carbon dioxide released by deforestation exacerbate global warming. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that insulates infrared radiation from the Sun in the form of heat, raising the global temperature. Hence, trees are essential in limiting the rise in global temperaturing. Thus, removing a large number of trees increases greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, subsequently exacerbating global warming.
15 - Life on Land: Deforestation also links closely to the UN SDG of Life on Land because it causes habitat loss, land degradation, a decline in biodiversity and damage to the health of terrestrial ecosystems. Deforestation is associated with a loss of biodiversity and poses a significant threat to rare and endangered species living in rainforests that rely on the food and shelter that the forest provides.
Facts
Deforestation constitutes around 10% of global warming (WWF, 2019).
The process of deforestation emits large amounts of carbon dioxide: approximately 4.8 billion tonnes per year (Lai, 2022).
Deforestation can lead to soil degradation, erosion and landslides, detrimental to the growth of new trees (Aldridge Mugadza, 2022).
When trees are removed, the habitats of animals are destroyed, and their food sources are taken away, causing a decline in the population of native species (perhaps even extinction) (Stand For Trees, 2021).
“More than half the world’s land-based plants and animals, and three-quarters of all birds, live in and around forests” (WWF, 2019).
Many rely on forests as their home or source of income, so deforestation negatively affects their life (The Humane League, 2022).
Around 10 million hectares of forest are lost yearly due to deforestation (Lai, 2022).
Deforestation, the removal of trees in an area previously a forest, is a global issue that causes adverse effects on the environment and humans alike.

"Deforestation is a very serious issue destroys our earth and animal habitats which leads to the extinction of numerous animals. Humans cannot and never will be able to survive in a world without trees. I believe raising awareness for this problem can help change and improve the world. It can help passively reduce deforestation therefore also fulfilling my duty as a global citizen.”
