Leading Projects, People and Teams Level 3
Poplar - Leadership
Team structure
Project requirements
On Poplar as the project had numerous blocks running concurrently meant the programme was fast paced. Also the size of the site was fairly large so I knew that it would require a mix of an older demographic with the relevant experience delivering projects like this but also wanted to ensure some of our younger, less experienced employees were involved to improve their experience and skill set whilst utilising them to cover a lot more of the site supervision works involving a lot more running around on the project.
KPIs
H&S
-
• Completion of Weekly H&S paperwork i.e. Safe starts, tool box talks, PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) Sheets
• Demonstrating good H&S principles working on site i.e. Wearing full PPE, Working at height following their RAMS and proper precautions
-
Situational leadership
As we had a fairly big gap of demographics on the project I had to use situational leadership to better communicate between both age groups. As an example, there was an instance where a younger and older employee were working together on quality assuring electrical containment within the basement. Although they largely followed the sheet they missed of some important checks which ultimately lead to the works having to be remedied at a later date. I knew I had to approach this differently for each person so decided to speak to them separately first and then together to drive home the message of not letting the same scenario happen again
Older employee, more experience (Autocratic) – As they had more experience, I was quite stern with my approach. They knew better as they had been doing this for long enough. I reiterated the fact that the younger employee was looking up to him as a mentor so its important that the process was followed moving forward
• Younger employee, less experience (Democratic)– I sat down and methodically went through the QA process with them and how to fill this out. They had experience doing QAs but in this instance, they had just followed what the older employee had said rather than question it. I wanted to empower the younger employee to speak up and question if things didn’t seem right
Woodwharf - H&S incident
Leadership Style adopted
As this was a H&S issue I took the Autocratic approach as there are no excuses to not adhering to H&S rules on a construction site especially when it is for their own safety and welfare.
