Environmentally Benign
Definition
A non-hostile location protected from external hostile elements by physical, personnel, and procedural security countermeasures.

Keys to achieve
-
Material selection
Select environmentally benign material based on:
- Efficient design so that demand for material will be minimised.
- Fitness for purpose, which requires minimal maintenance and can accommodate future adaption, which can significantly reduce its environmental impact during its lifetime.
- Local context. Thought should be given to specification of materials that are appropriate given the environmental conditions and skills of the local labour force.
- Responsible sourcing
Fabrication process.Consideration should be given to how the structure will be constructed to ensure that construction waste is minimised
- Deconstruction. Consideration should first be given to whether materials could be reused in their original form, repurposed.
Manufacturing planning
- Minimise resources consumed and waste generated by manufacturing
