Anadiplosis
Definition: Repetition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next.
Example: "'That's what I said, but Marina said, 'Don't tell' because Dad is funny about stuff like that and he might blame her.' 'Blame her!" He wouldn't' All this was giving me a new view of what it meant to be a girl with a pretty face." (Lisle 75).
Epistrophe
Definition: The repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences
Example: "'What does that mean?' 'It means just what it means,'" (Lisle 33).
Epanalepsis
Definition: Repitition after intervening words
"'It means just what it means,'" (Lisle 33)
Asyndeton
Definition: Omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join words or clauses
Example: "
You know what. Movies, magazines, computer games,
" (Lisle 39).
Polysyndeton
Definition: Using conjunctions in close succession, especially where some would usually be omitted
Example: 'He wouldn't take any thanks for it, either, which is why my mother would find a couple of fresh-caught bluefish on our front porch some mornings, or a slab of smoked ham or an apple pie," (Lisle 12).
Anaphora
Definition: The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of a successive clause.
Example: "'And when we left to report it, somebody stole it. And there were no signs of where it went, and no one's talking about it,'" (Lisle 70).
Antithesis
Definition: A contrast or opposition between two things
Example: "She was unmarried, younger than my mother, and known for stating her opinions whatever company she was in," (Lisle 41).
