Antithesis
A contrast or opposition between two things
Example: "I'm a senior in high school, David explains to build up his case. It's a slight exaggeration. He'll be a freshman next fall."
Anadiplosis
Repetition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next.
Example: "Whatever Jeddy thought or felt, I understood and respected, and I'd step back and make allowances for it."
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
Example: "Her coat and hat hung on a hook in the hall, as if she'd only stepped out for a moment. Her wedding china was on display in the parlor cabinet. Her sheet music sat on the piano. Her bold handwriting filled the book of recipes that lay open, more often than not, on the counter in the kitchen where Marina, Jeddy's older sister, was now in charge.
Asyndeton
Omission of conjuctions that ordinarily join words or clauses.
Example: "'I might,' he answered. 'And then again, we may never know exactly.'
'Exactly what?'"
Epanalepsis
Repetition after intervening words.
Example: "The number listed in the telephone book doesn't answer. There is an address, though. "
Epistrophe
The repetition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Example: "Had adventures. What adventures?"
Polysyndeton
Using conjunctions in close succession especially where some would usually be omitted.
Example: "He dealt fair and square no matter who you were, and often he was more than fair."
