Anadiplosis
Definiotn: Repition of the final words of a sentence or line at the beginning of the next
Example: "There was an empty wooden case that was washed in with the body. A bootlegger's case. That's gone too." (Lisle 32)
Anaphora
Definiton: The repitition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
Example: "He hitches home this time rather than wait for his mother. He's touched on something, he knows it." (Lisle 6)
Antithesis
Definiton: A contrast or oppositon between two things
Example: "Though he was short, far shorter than my father, his meaty chest gave him the hunvhed looks of a bulldog." (Lisle 49)
Asyndeton
Example: " There never was much warmth or fun between us, the way some boys have with thier dads, but one thing I was sure of." (Lisle 13)
Definiton: Omission of conjunctions that ordinarily join words or clauses.
Epistrophe
Definiton:The repition of a word at the end of successive clauses or sentences.
Example: "We're late! Jeddy whispered ecstatically. Too late!" (Lisle 65)
Epanalepsis
Definition: Repitition after intervening words
Example: People look back now and thinks those days were romantic, all high jinks and derrign-do. They're mistaken. David had brought a notepad along expecting to jot down interesting facts. Not romantic, he write at the top of his page"(Lisle 8)
Polysyndeton
Definiton: Use conjuctions in close succession, especially where some would usually be omitted.
Example: For a time we stood rooted in place, staring at the dead man, and at the pool of gray water he lay in, and at the gulls who floated on the incoming swells just off shore, watching our movemtns with cold yellow eyes." (Lisle 19)
