The Nature of Management Research
Intro
management project should be a piece of applied management research
Some definitions of 'research'
Testing a stated idea or assertion to see if the evidence supports it or not, It may involve putting in place experimental practices and comparing them with other controlled or current practices but can also employ simple data-gathering procedures.
Engaging in planned or unplanned interactions with or interventions in parts of the real world and reporting on what happens and what they seem to mean.
Gathering data in an organised manner.
there is a reasonable consensus on three fundamental aspects of the research process and its outcome(s).
It is a process of enquiry and investigation.
It is progressed systematically and is methodical (i.e., is conducted such as to follow a set of prescribed steps).
It increases knowledge (at least for the researcher).
Collis and Hussey’s four elements of research
Its purpose.
The process by which it was conducted.
The outcome(s).
The approach adopted to address the research question (or management problem).
Collis and Hussey (2014) suggest representative examples of research that can be classified by its purpose.

Outcome ----> Basic vs Applied Research
Basic
basic refer to academically motivated (driven by the objective of creating knowledge) research
Applied
applied research addresses practical concerns. Rather than seeking to generalise, applied research seeks to find a solution to a problem, or to establish how an opportunity can be exploited.
Approach
Deductive
the objective of which is to work with an existing theory or a particular idea and then to validate this through gathering data.
Inductive
Inductive research is concerned with building theories and models from empirical data
Abductive
making a probable conclusion from what you have found out.
