Airway Obstruction
Causes
Foreign body in
larynx and pharynx
Symptoms
Choking/gagging
violent expiratory effect/
substernal notch retraction
cyanosis
labored breathing/respiratory arrest
rapid pulse --> decreased pulse
cardiac arrest
Signs of Recovery & Deterioration
Deterioration
foreign body not recovered =
refer pt for radiographic localization
Cyanosis
patient loses consciousness
cardiac/respiratory arrest
re-evaluate diagnosis
maintain BLS await EMS
Recovery
Breathing returns to normal
foreign body is removed/swallowed
PABCD Treatment
P:supine=pt loses consciousness
otherwise upright
A/B: If choking – perform
Heimlich
No succes clearing airway &
pt loses consciousness
Activate EMS
place patient supine
Tilt head backward to
open airway
check for respiratory sounds or
ventilate if poss
perform abdominal thrusts
