Opportunities for participation:
politics, by voting or campaigning on a local, national or global issue.
the local community, by volunteering for local charities
the wider community, by involvement in charities to improve health or campaign for justice and equality

Participation outside the UK:
Features of a democratic system:
most adult citizens can vote- registration is automatic
most adult citizens can stand in election
participation in elections is high and seen as civic duty
politicians are seen by voters as normal people
there is a large range of parties that often cooperate with coalitions
elections are free fair and open
anyoe can join or form political parties and pressure groups
freedom of expression is highly valued
the media are free to express any view they want
Features of a non democratic system
no genuine elections, people can only vote for local officials and most ballots only contain one candidate
countries leader is a dictator who decides everything
there is no rule of law
no opportunities to take part in legal political activity that is not approved by leader
there is no free media
Barriers to participation:
lack of interest, about politics or community issues, feeling there is no point as it makes no difference
lack of awareness, and education on how to exercise power and influence
busy lives, or lack of time from working long hours or childcare
worry about process, or the impact of their position in society on others
