Is bias inevitable in the production of knowledge?
Points
Yes
Everything we say and do has bias as it has to go through our minds?
We choose to believe what we want to believe and choose to spread information about something on what we want to spread
Example: If you're producing a piece of writing, you want to make it the best possible writing and you will choose how you want to start and end it
Humans are naturally biased and since information is produced by humans, therefore it means that bias is inevitable
Example: Psychology (or human sciences in general) may study humans to gain and produce knowledge. However, this means that there might be bias from the subjects and/or the research as humans are naturally biased
Example (Psychology): Psychologist Freud believes that humans have three parts of their mind, the conscious ego, the super-ego, and the unconsciousness. He also believes that dreams are an indication of subconscious unfulfilled desires or fears. When he interpreted the volunteers' dreams and his patients denied his interpretations, he refuses to believe that he was wrong; instead, he thought that they were trying to hide/cover up their subconscious desires.
Example: Natural sciences. Even in natural sciences, when you are studying different leaves or inanimate objects, there will still be bias from the researcher. For example, how the research preceives or interprets the data to form a conclusion and produce knowledge.
Even if bias has been recognized, it is very hard to eliminate but possible to minimize
Example: Choosing a random group of people than hand-picking people to participate in a study
Example: Other people replicating an experiment designed by you
Human bias may come from our experiences. Whether it may be our personal experience or other knowledge that we have came across
No
Example: Learning how to walk for the first time (THIS MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED PROD. OF KNOWLEDGE)
The production of knowledge would not be biased if the knowledge production process involves help of a machine or tool in that the knowledge is presented in a numerical way. Because measurements and calculations cannot be affected by bias, this knowledge produced would not be biased.
Objects
An article that shows people's inevitable bias in a certain situation
Some sort of record of the experiment conducted by psychologist Freud (e.g. notes, results, or findings)
