- What role do experts play in influencing our consumption or acquisition of knowledge?
-
experts make knowledge easily accessible by the general public in terms of language, comprehensibility and understanding
experts are qualified and credible, meaning that the transmission of knowledge on their part is more effective than unofficial sources
objection: the internet provides abundant information and knowledge, whether that is from official or unofficial sources
comparison between textbooks: one professionally written with no language modification, the other written for ib students (language difference in technicality, professionalism and terms)
- What role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world?
discovery and invention (creativity, innovation)
-
-
-
possible objects: first world map, hieroglyph, galaxies and universe (our predictions of what is beyond the milky way is all organized with imagination)
- Should some knowledge not be sought on ethical grounds?
No, it should be sought no matter the ethics: ethics are subjective, while knowledge is objective. Subjectivity should not hinder our ability to discover and understand the world. The barrier of ethics limits the knowledge that is attainable. The constant pursuit of knowledge is essential for human survival and is the reason for all advancements in society - if knowledge can be gained with the sole research purposes and not for power or leverage, then the research should be pursuited. Ethics change overtime and through ages / time periods - time is also a limit agent of knowledge (some knowledge has time constraints)
Yes, it should not be sought if conflicting with ethical values: Knowledge is never guaranteed. It doesn’t make sense to discard all decency and safeguards in pursuit of what might be there to find.
Maybe: depending on how crucial that information is, and whether its discovery / understanding is necessary for future implications. Weighing sacrifices and rewards (outcomes). Evaluating consequences and opportunity costs.
Objects: some sort of psychology experiment, medical sacrifices (healthcare ethics), technology (big data, lack of autonomy, permission, privacy)
- What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge?

physical (tech), ethical, time, religion
religion - pursuit of some understandings and experiences are frowned upon or forbidden (with consequences)
