Research Strategies
Saunders et al. (2016, p.178) identify eight different strategies:
experiment
survey
archival and documentary research
case study
action research
ethnographic research
grounded theory
narrative enquiry.
There are two terms used to describe how multiple data sources are brought together in research. These are:
triangulation strategies
triangulation sets out to observe a phenomenon from different positions using different techniques. By looking from each perspective, the research can map and understand the phenomena more accurately
may be used in case study research
sequential strategies.
A sequential strategy uses different data at different points in the research process
sequential research strategies are more associated with action research
Choosing a Research Strategy
The following checklist of issues may help select a strategy
The approach you need will depend upon:
the problem you are trying to solve
your research philosophy
the existing body of knowledge
the type/quality of data you will be able to collect
the volume of data available
the resources available: (personal, skills, tools, finance)
scope
return on investment
timescales.
