Sinophobia is a fear or hatred of Chinese people, culture, or things of Chinese origin. It is a form of racism and discrimination that has a long history, particularly in Western societies. Sinophobia can manifest in various ways, such as verbal and physical abuse, exclusion from social and economic opportunities, and negative stereotypes in media and popular culture. Sinophobia has been particularly prevalent in times of economic, political, or social tension, such as during periods of high immigration or during conflicts between China and other countries. It has been a key factor in the history of Chinese diaspora, discrimination and violence against them. In recent years, there has been a rise in Sinophobia in some countries, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to a number of cases of hate crimes and discrimination against people of Chinese descent.
