Anemias - Coggle Diagram
Anemias
Microcytic (MCV < 80)
-
Defective heme synthesis
Iron-deficiency anemia
- starts normocytic, but usually by the time it is clinically apparent it is microcytic
-
-
*Anemia of chronic disease
(usually normocytic, but can progress to microcytic)
Normocytic (MCV 80-100)
-
Hemolytic
Intrinsic
Membrane defects
Hereditary spherocytosis
- MCV is low, but mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is high due to RBC dehydration and membrane loss
- basically, due to the decreased overall volume of the RBCs (low MCV) while hemoglobin concentration remains the same, MCHC increases (hemoglobin is concentrated in less RBCs)

-
Macrocytic (MCV > 80)
Nonmegaloblastic
-
Liver disease, alcoholism
