Melanoma, Signs and symptoms: If any of these present, it should be…
Melanoma
Diagnosis
-
-
3-Breslow thickness: measure in mm how far melanoma has gone into deeper layers of the skin
6-General health tests: family history, medical history and physical examinations
2-Skin punch biopsy
1-Skin exam: based on ABCDE( assymetry, border, color, diameter and evolving)
Staging
Stage 3 (Regional lymph node): Advanced form of cancer, melanoma has spread to nearby lymph node, lymph vessels, or skin.+/- Genetic Testing
-
Stage 4 (metastatic disease):Tumor can be any thickness +/- ulceration . Cancer moved from primary tumor to distant areas of body (liver, lung..). +/-Genetic testing
Stage 2: tumor deeper than 1 mm that may or may not be ulcerated. Has higher chance of cancer spread beyond the primary tumor
Risk Factors
1-Predisposed characteristics: genetic changes, light skin( due to decreased melanin ), history of sunburn, many moles ( >50, large)
2-Environmental factors: tanning, glowing skin
3-Family history: represents about 10% of cases, so patients with high risk factors must make routine skin exams and genetic testing

Introduction:
-Is one of the most serious types of skin cancer since it has the highest rate of metastasis
-It develops from pigment cells called melanocytes
-Can be found anywhere on your body but mainly in areas of most sun exposure
Causes: Due to genetic or environmental factor like UV radiation from sun this lead to damaging in skin cells, new cells may grow out of control and can form a mass of cancerous cells
Signs and symptoms: If any of these present, it should be checked by health care provider
- A change in an existing mole according to ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving
-
- Ugly duckling sign (a spot that looks different from all other spots on your skin)
