MIND, BRAIN & LEARNING
Neurons (Nerve cells)-Receive & transmit information
-Neuron integrates information receive from all it synapses
-Determines output
SYNAPTIC CONNECTIONS BETWEEN NEURONS
Synapses=Junctions that allow neuron to transmit signal to another cell
1.Excitatory synapse 2.Inhibitory synapse
ADDITION OF NEW SYNAPSES
Operates throughtout entire human life span
Driven by experience
Basis of memory formation
BRAIN/MIND LEARNING PRINCIPLES (12)
PRINCIPLE 1-All Learning is Physiological
Premise:
That body, brain, and mind operate as an integrated system (interconnectedness – embodied cognition)
Brain changes as a result of experience – neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life)
There needs to be sensory engagement, physical movement & action if a new concept is to be mastered
LEARNING CAPACITY
All students learn more effectively when involved in experiences that naturally call on the use of their senses, action, movement and decision making
PRINCIPLE 2: THE BRAIN/ MIND IS SOCIAL
PREMISE
Human – social being, has ‘contact urge’
Brain/mind designed to learn by imitation & from modelling
Human relate to one another influence & affect their language, beliefs, state of mind, access to higher order
Learning Capacity: All student learn more effectively when their social nature and need for relationship are engaged & honored
PRINCIPLE 3:THE SEARCH FOR MEANING IS INNATE
LEARNING CAPACITY:All student can learn effectively when their interest and ideas are engaged ang honored
Use listening and questioning to elicit student interest and questions
PRINCIPLE 5:EMOTIONS ARE CRITICAL TO PATTERNING
PREMISE
Emotions are part of every thought, decision & response
LEARNING CAPACITY:All students can learn more effectively when appropriate emotions are elicited by their experiences
IMPLICATION FOR LEARNING INSTRUCTION
Engage emotional connections
Treats students with respect
Promotes positive attitudes
Brain is deeply networked and emotions are connected everywhere
Help discover love, get beyond fun to passion and make content resonate positively
PRINCIPLE 4:THE SEARCH FOR MEANING ACCURS THROUGH PATTERNING
Human driven by need to identify name and organize configuration of elements/patterns that make up their own world
PRINCIPLE 6:THE BRAINS/MIND PROCESSES PARTS & WHOLES SIMULTANEOUSLY
Making sense rewuires both big picture
Make students learn more effectively with their experiences (give sense the whole links details)
PRINCIPLES 7:LEARNING INVOLVES BOTH FOCUSED ATTENTION & PERIPHERAL PERCEPTION
attention is critical to memory and learning
Learning more effectively when attention is deepened
Engage both conscious & unconscious processing (using pic, music)
PRINCIPLE 9:2 APPROACHES TO MEMORY
Learning effectively:Taught through experiences (multiple ways to remember)
PRINCIPLE 10:LEARNING IS DEVELOPMENTAL
All learning builds on previous learning(changes in physiology)
All students can learn more effectively if individual differences in maturation and development are taken into consideration
PRINCIPLE 11:COMPLEX LEARNING ENCHANCED BY CHALLENGE & INHIBITED
Brain/mind become less effective when survival response "kicks in"
Supportive and challenging environment can make learning more effectively
PRINCIPLE 12:EACH BRAIN IS UNIQUELY ORGANIZED
Human are similar and different brain different (unique blend of experience & genetics
Learn effectively-engaged talents, abilities
