Induction training
New employees are given induction training when they start a job. it provides an introduction to the business and their job. Employees learn about health and safety procedures, the tasks they are expected to carry out, fire evacuations policies and what facilities the business has for the staff.
Advantage: Employees become familiar with the organisation and job role more quickly.
Disadvantage: Could be overwhelming for the new employee.
Disadvantage: Time consuming for both the new employee and the person carrying out the induction training.
Advantage: Allows the employee to feel part of the business from day one.
Advantage: It shows the employee that the business is interested in the new employee.
On-the-off training
This is when training takes place within the business that the person works for. A more experienced employee ('a peer') might show someone how to carry out a task or the manager might give a presentation to a group of staff on a specific task.
Advantage: Less expensive than off-the-job training.
Advantage: Creates a good working relationship between the employee and employer.
Advantage: Training is tailored to the businesses' objectives and needs.
Disadvantage: The employee is still expected to carry out their normal duties.
Disadvantage: The quality of the training might not be as a high standard as off-the-job training
Off-the-job training
Disadvantage: No work is done when people are away undertaking training
Advantage: Training provided by expereinced trainers.
Advantage: Qualifications can be gained.
This is when training takes place outside the business that the person works for. The training might be provided by a local college or a specialist training company. Off-the-training might last for a few hours or a few years (eg - ig a person was undertaking a qualification part-time at college).
Disadvantage: Can be expensive
Advantage: Often provides the opportunity to 'network' - talking to people from other organisations
Disadvantage: Some off-the-job training can take a long time (eg - degrees).
