Assessment for Learning assess a student’s comprehension and understanding of a skill or lesson during the learning and teaching process. Sometimes it is referred to as "formative assessment." The main aim of Assessment for Learning is to close the gap between the learners' current learning and where they need to be for their summative assessment. Examples of this assessment includes Think-Pair-Share, Classroom Polls, Exit Tickets,Thumbs up, etc
-
Assessments of Learning is also referred to as "summative assessment" and is typically administered at the end of a unit or grading period and evaluates a student’s understanding by comparing his or her achievement against a class-, district-, or nationwide benchmark or standard. Example of this assessment: Interim/Benchmark Assessment. SAT test, TOEFL test.
Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. It aims to help all students develop their capacity to be independent autonomous learners who are able to set individual goals, monitor their own progress, determine the next steps, and reflect on their thinking and learning.Examples are self-assessment and reflection, peer learning.
Diagnostic assessment
Example: ESL students have difficulty with speaking, writing, and grammar. To help ESL students, it is important to first assess their level of English proficiency. This can be done through a language assessment or by observing the student in a classroom
A diagnostic assessment is very important when trying to gauge students' level. By doing so, we can see their strengths and weaknesses are and customize our lessons based off the results.

Below is a great example of how we can use a diagnostic test to evaluate the level ESL students should be.
Performance assessment
A performance assessment is a great tool for both teachers and students to see how they are progressing. There are a number of ways we can use a performance assessment to gauge students' ability such as project-based learning, quizzes, and exams. In addition, creating a portfolio of all the students work is also used as a tool for performance assessment. This allows us to see all their work in one place and ensures that students understand what they are learning. The importance of performance assessments is to see if the student understands what they are being taught and how we can make changes to ensure that they understand the material later on.
Example of how we can use a performance assessment for ESL learners.
Speaking: Helps to ensure that they are able to communicate. They are asked to use the target language and a short conversation depending on their level. The teacher will assess the student's pronunciation, fluency, and use of vocabulary and grammar.
Reading: Helps to ensure that students are able to read and understand the material. The student is given a short passage and a list of questions are given to answer. This allows for reading and speaking comprehension. They complete multiple choice-based questions or short summary of the passage.
Listening:
Listening: Helps to ensure students listening capabilities. Students are presented with listening tracks and are to complete multiple-choice questions and filling in the gaps for sentence-based questions.
