Explain how Forest School promotes self-esteem and emotional intelligence

Internal
Control
Forest School aims to help children be able to function in a wide range of social settings as they grow up.
Children should be included and inclusive.
Emotions need to be controlled in certain environments e.g. school but forest school is a relatively informal environment where children can explore their emotions in a safe environment.
Catalyst
This an individuals intrinsic and unique passions
We must create opportunities that enthuse learners to develop their traits of determination and self-motivation, which will make them more likely to become high achievers
Modern life provides a lot of instant gratification e.g. screen time, this may be reducing children's patience for working towards long term goals
Consciousness
We are conscious of the effect we have on ourselves, others and our environment and vice versa.
Our consciousness increases with age and cognitive ability so we must consider what stage of development different individuals are at.
We must teach children to take responsibility for their actions, but this can be in a positive way e.g. empowering children to believe they have the ability to have a positive impact on other people/the environment etc.,
External
Community and Companionship
Creating shared experiences at forest school creates a sense of community. Shared experiences may also lead to shared beliefs and behaviours.
A sense of community makes learners feel more safe and confident to challenge themselves while at forest school
Companionship is integral to community. Children do not have as much companionship as in the past, with a shift to online friendship.
We must empower children to decide who they would like the companionship of and what communities they would like to be a part of.
Compassion
Forest School leaders have a professional duty of care to be compassionate and respectful towards their learners
Children need to be shown love and care to develop empathy e.g. if an individual is listened to they are more likely to be a good listener to others
Emotional Intelligence's
Self motivation
At forest school we provide opportunities designed to enthuse different individuals by focusing upon their unique passions. This helps them become self motivated.
Understanding others emotions
Forest school leaders should be compassionate towads their learners because it is only when we are shown care and consideration that we develop the ability to show it to others.
Regulating our emotions
Their are 9 stages of emotional development from birth to the age of 5 years. Young children need consistent caregivers (including Forest School leaders) throughout these stages to be able to develop the ability to regulate their emotions.
Influencing others emotions
Forest School provides children with a community in which they can develop their social skills and begin to negotiate and collaborate with others in a team.
Recognising our emotions
At forest school we ask children to reflect on their likes and dislikes and what emotions they have felt throughout a session.

Forest school leaders should assess these signs of well-being in their baseline assessment to see what stage of emotional development a young child is at, and therefore the most appropriate ways to help them continue to develop positively.
