Nature of ethnic conflict
What and Why?
EC must involve some form of confrontation between the opposing ethnic groups. This can range from a simple protest to a full-scale war.
The nature of the conflict depends on how strongly held the beliefs are and how diverse the issue is
Civil Disobedience
To be effective, it needs the support of a large group.
What
A symbolic refusal to obey certain laws as one group feel they are discriminated against
Example - a worker's strike, which can affect the whole country or the boycotting of services owned by opposing group.
It is usually non-violent but can become unintentionally violent.
Example - Gandhi leading Indians to challenge the British causing small scale violence and British loosing control of areas.
Example - MLK jr set up non-violent CD to combat racially inequality in America.
Civil War
What
Armed forces are actively engaged in conflict with each other within the country with the aim for one of the groups to take control at the others expense
This can be large scale, with conflict being maintained and organised. There must be >1000 casualties a year to be classified as a civil war.
Example - Syrian War since 2011 between the majority Sunni Muslims against minority ruling elite Shia
American CW - 11 southern confederate states against 28 states with aim to abolish slavery in the south.
-750,000 soldiers killed with the collapse of confederacy.
Terrorism
An armed campaign that involves criminal acts to provoke a state of terror to the public by a particular group for political purposes. A terrorist is apart of an illegal guerrilla org.
It is often used when CD does not have the desired impact so groups will use violence to achieve their objectives. It is a major threat to society as civilians are targeted
Example - During The Troubles, the IRA carried out terrorist attacks against Unionists eg UVF and British Army. Car bombs were used and they attacked rival groups. 700 military personnel were killed over the conflict
