- - - - However, such imprudent printing caused the value of the German mark to rapidly decrease in value. Within a short space of time, many saw their savings wiped out and their livelihoods completely ruined.
  - - - With the 1929 Stock Market crash in America, it plunged world markets into deep despair. America recalled her loans to Germany. Germany soon experienced an economic crisis with millions losing their jobs. By 1932, 6 million or one-third the population was unemployed.
  - - - Weak Support
        
        The Weimar Government themselves lacked the support of the
        people as well.
      - Opposition from Right and Left
        
        The Weimar government faced opposition from the Right- and Left- wing extremists.
        
        Those on the right wanted the Kaiser back. They disagreed with the Treaty of Versailles which the Weimar government signed. They blamed the politicians for failing to continue the war. They even had the 1920 Kapp Putsch.
        
        Those on the left wanted a communist government. They wanted to follow Communist Russia. They even began the Spartacist Rebellion in 1919.
      - Constitution & Proportional representation
        
        The government depended on proportional representation from itself, meaning that people voted for a party and this party gained seats based on the percentage of votes they received -> a high degree of fragmentation with many small parties -> the formation of coalition governments as parties needed to gain a majority to pass legislation. From 1919-1933, there were some 20 different coalition governments.
- - - - In January 1933, Hindenburg and the previous chancellor von Papen invited Hitler to be chancellor. They believed that they could control Hitler and the Nazi party, in doing so, gain support for their policies. However, Hitler would later use his position to consolidate power and establish dictatorial rule.
  - - - In 1923, Hitler became famous as the leader of the Nazi Party when he attempted to overthrow the government in Munich. The incident is known as the Beer Hall Putsch. In prison, he wrote his now infamous book, Mein Kampf, which means ‘my struggle’ -> helped broadcast his beliefs and aims to the general population.
        
        In the book, he discusses several notable ideas, including the need to revive Germany’s former glory. Hitler wrote about the superiority of the Germans as the master Aryan race, the Super-humans, as opposed to the lower races, the Sub-humans. One of these races was the Jews. Hitler also discussed the need for living space, lebensraum, in the lands east of Germany.
