Definition
Exposition is a critical evaluation of an idea.
Purpose
Exposition aims to express arguments about an issue and justify it. Exposition is usually found in essays, editorials, political debates or commentaries
Organizational Structure
Thesis: which introduces the issue and opinion or position of the author.
A series of Arguments: A number of arguments that support the thesis, and contain factual information, evidence or descriptions or explanations that support the thesis.
Restatement of the Thesis (Reiteration of the Thesis). Reaffirmation of the thesis stated earlier. The statements in this section are stronger and more "direct" than the statements stated in the thesis.
Types of Exposition Text
Analytical Exposition is an Exposition that aims to convince that something is true or not true, or that something is good or bad or something is important or not important, depending on the topic.
Hortatory Exposition is an Exposition "to persuade to" (Martin, 1985; Gerot, 1998) or convinces or persuades someone or readers to do something.
Language Features
Using mental verbs: I believe, I think, I like..
Use connectives to maintain a logical connection between the ideas being expressed.
Move from personal statements to impersonal statements.
Use of modality: Modal verbs, other modalities.
Using technical terms: Additive, cancer.
Using the opinion of experts to support the argument (shown by the existence of a reference, or the presence of a proper name)
Using objective language by using expressions such as: It seems obvious..., it can be seen that....
Using language to assess or evaluate Chemical additives threatens our health, Food is essential for our body.
Explain, describe and use evidence to support arguments so that the argument is more factual and "powerful".
Using passive sentences (Smoking should be banned; Stu dents' learning should be promoted...)
