Representation of Class
Upper class
Monarchy
Nairn Monarchy successfully converted modern media to its cause, rarely criticize institutions or individuals. After 2nd World war presented family as 'like us' but 'not like us' - create national identity
e.g Queen is 'ordinary woman' doing 'extraordinary job'
Wealth
Newman Positive depiction of lifestyle - lots of business news and little focus on inequalities
e.g housewives of Atlanta or the Kardashians
Uk mass media rarely represent upper class in critical light or show serious attention to inequalities in wealth or overrepresentation of public school product in power
Representations in televisions costume drama tend to represent in eccentric + nostalgic way
e.g The Kings speech or Downton Abby
Working Class

Curran + Seaton Newspapers aimed at w/c assume no internet in analysis of political organisation - Coverage is marginal with no focus on causes
Murray 'Chavs' used to make underclass less sympathetic in terms of economic situation - Seen as crazy/ lack of class/ no obligation to help/sympathise
-
Middle Class

- Content is aimed at m/c
- M/c content makers- representing themselves
Pluralist

Representations of upper class demonstrate audience admriation of wealthier people - aspire to be like them
Depictions of w/c people conform to audience taste - wouldn't exist if seen as problematic
