        -Hanneke gives advice to Alma on how to deal with her suffering
        -Hanneke gives Alma an idea of how to handle things herself
        -Good advice because Hanneke will not always be there for her
        -Shows how Hanneke plays a big role in Alma's life
        -Mr. Knightly doesn't tell Emma exactly how to act in the future, but makes her feel slightly guilty
        -He does this in hopes that she now knows it's better to not speak than to risk hurting others
        -He expresses his regrets regarding Emma's actions
        -He is almost saying "Don't let me down."
        -This gives Emma the responsibility to make better decisions and have better actions in the future
      - Hanneke tells Alma, "Well, child, you may do whatever you like with your suffering...but I shall tell you what I do with mine...I cast it to the ground, and I grind it under the heel of my boot. I suggest you learn to do the same." (The Signature of All Things)
      - Knightly told Emma, "...I will tell you truths while I can, satisfied with proving myself your friend by very faithful counsel, and trusting that you will some time or other do me greater justice than you can do now." (Emma)

        -Gives insight of Alma and Hanneke's good relationship
        -Emma's reaction to what Mr. Knightly said shows that she is embarrassed and sorry, as well as uncomfortable in the situation

        -Most likely wouldn't be embarrassed for him calling her out if he was around her age
        -Both older and respected by main characters
      - "Alma loved the word "child" in Dutch. Kindje. This was the nickname that Hanneke had always called Alma when she was young and afraid and would climb into the housekeeper's bed in the middle of the night." (Signature of All Things)
      - Mr. Knightly said to Emma, "How could you be so insolent in your wit to a woman of her character, age, and situation?" (Emma)

        -Hanneke tells Alma that she may not be as aware of the people around her and their disappointments as she thinks.
        -Hanneke understands part of her job is to help guide Alma
        -Mr.Knighlty informs Emma of her mistakes and explains why it was wrong
        -Emma is influenced by his pointing out of her wrongdoing
      - "I'm not certain you are. You are still young, so you think only of your own self...Do not protest; it is true," (The Signature of All Things)
      - Mr.Knightly tells Emma, "Miss Bates is poor, she has sunk from the comfort she was born into...Her situation should secure your compassion. It was badly done, indeed!" (Emma)

        The similarity that both the older and respectable roles share is that they both point out the wrongdoing of the main characters and give them guidance.
      - In the "Signature of All Things," the character that plays this role in Alma's life is Alma's housekeeper, Hanneke. In "Emma," the character that plays this role is Mr. Knightly.
- - - - World Connection
        
        Just as Hanneke and Mr.Knight gave Alma and Emma advice, children all over the world could use the same guidance their elders gave them to ensure they become good and respectable people.
      - By being respectable elders to Emma and Alma, Hanneke and Mr. Knight's opinions were able to affect Emma and Alma in a way where they were put into a position where they could help the girls change by helping them fix their mistakes and become better. Their signifigant roles helped shape their character and provide insight that can be used later in their lives.
