Patriotic Renewal
Reagan aimed to revive patriotism in a nation separated by the Vietnam war.
In 1984 the Olympic games were held in the US. People were very excited and festive about the event.
These were all successful in raising patriotism.
In 1986 the centennial of the statue of liberty was nationally celebrated.
In 1987 the US celebrated the 200th anniversary of the constitution. Workshops and lectures were sponsored by the government.
Civil Rights
Due to conservative policies on social issues tensions were getting more intense and the rights issues would have to be addressed.
in 1983 the first black mayors were elected in the cities of Charlotte, north carolina, philadelphia, and chicago.
In 1989 New York elected African American David Dinkins to be mayor.
in 1983 Reagan signed a bill to make the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. a national holiday.
Reagan made an attempt to prevent the extension of the 1965 voting rights act but after intense backlash was unable.
Women's Rights
During Reagan's presidency the women's rights movement was facing a lot of backlash.
The 1982 proposed equal rights amendment did not gain the approval of enough state legislatures to be ratified.
Anti-Abortion groups formed to get rid of the abortion right granted in 1973.
Women were getting more careers.
Sexual Orientation
The Gay rights campaign was sparked by the AIDS epidemic
The reagan administration did not do much to help with the AIDS crisis because they were very conservative
Supreme Court
During his presidency Reagan appointed mainly conservatives to the federal courts.
Reagan selected two conservatives to be supreme court justices however he also selected the first woman supreme court justice.
The democratic party still had control over the senate.

Farm Crisis
The farming industry was heavily affected by the recession and was causing serious problems in the economy.
Farmers faced oversupply and falling prices in the 1980s.
Falling prices hit farmers hard and many farmers risked losing their farms to bankruptcy.
As a result money was provided as government aid but this was only a temporary solution to the problem.
Shifts in Manufacturing
Foreign competition was taking over a lot of the production in the United states.
People lost jobs in the recession and were unable to get them back due to many companies going bankrupt.
S and L Scandal
Reagan deregulated savings and loans banks and the government had to make up billions of dollars to the public after many failed.
