Teaching in online and blended learning environment
Assignment Part B
INTRODUCTION
Shift from being about giving and getting information an from computer-based instructions to a student-led approach to instructional design and learning, collaboration, knowledge sharing.
Researchers started to put Learners at the centre after 2000
IT revolutions helped that..
Exploring 4 decades....
Collaboration: single most important concept for online learning-> social glue of a community that engages learners and motivates them to participate
Working together to achieve the same shared goals
Shift happens....
1967: UK: Council for Educational Technology - "the development, application and evaluation of systems, techniques and aids to improve the process of human learning"
Different range of approaches to online
1) Hybrid
2) Fully web-based - old trad. distance learning (
teaching online is different
3) Traditional using web supplements
Brittany Gilbert - online learning revealing the benefits and challenges
Potential benefits
1) Learn at your own pace at your own place and time
2) Access to information
3) Reduced cost
4) Flexibility
5) Multiple participation
6) Breakdown some barriers
Challenges:
1) Collaboration
2) Student ability
3) Engagement
4) Practical topics
5) Access (money for tech)
6) Quality of tech
Explore "networked classrooms"
shift happens....
Presentation was engaging with participants - what they know..
Visually appealing
Comments that it was v. relatable / Making it relevent to the students - kept it current / topical too
Good pacing of presentation
Kept it interesting and surprising
Good mix with audience - let them talk - good use of questioning and letting students talk / interaction
asked opinion questions within the lesson as this really engaged the students by making them feel as though they had a voice in the lesson
Relaxed
Well-managed
Comfortable answering questions
Webinar: French language
Sometimes no reaction....delayed response....difficult to "read the room"
Needed additional media like videos or polls - greater use of tools
Over-prepared the presentation
Be more confident
Feedback to others:
good mix of text, data, images
checking in with learning
use of polls
slides shared and available for questions
use of Apple pen felt more like a real classroom
assessment tools (thumbs up and down)
need to slowdown
preparation was key -> checking connection stability beforehand
Key learnings: need to be prepared technologically but careful not to over-prepare.
Use of a range of tools
Key issue is use of cameras - difficulty to know - asking questions and no response
Asynchronous Content: Days of the week
Better flow than webinar as I was in full control BUT over-prepare and fixed a few times
Not handling questions there and then made it easier to manage the lesson
It allows students to pause to practice their French - v. good for a language
very good for students who want to go at a slower pace...but too slow?
One of my peers suggested asking students to record and send in their own audio
and to upload homework
One drawback in formative assessment is that I couldn't give instant feedback
Feedback that I managed the class well and gave clear instructions
Moderating Forums
Feedback:
Good use/sharing of online resources
Prompt responses
Respect of forums
Encourage more discussion between students
Use for audio stimuli in French and students sharing
