Causative Factors

A common cause of bone marrow damage is the immune system attacking and destroying the stem cells in the bone marrow. (autoimmune illness)

Diagnostic Tests
Bone Marrow Tests: Aspiration, biopsy
Blood tests: Red blood cell levels, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit levels, and mean corpuscular volume levels

Risk Factors
Bleeding, leukemia, or other serious blood conditions
Without treatment, aplastic anemia can lead to irregular heartbeat and heart failure
Pathophysiology Etiology
Aplastic anemia is a disease of persistent primary hematopoietic failure brought on by trauma, which results in decreased or missing hematopoietic precursors in the bone marrow and accompanying pancytopenia.
Common Findings
S&S: fatigue, chronic infections, easily bruised or bleeding
