By the time the Cape changed hands during the Napoleonic Wars, humanitarians were vigorously campaigning against slavery. Ivory became the most important export from west-central Africa, satisfying the growing demand in Europe. British antislavery patrols drove the slave trade east, where ivory had been more significant.
Independence movements in the northern regions of Spanish South America had an inauspicious beginning in 1806. Beginning in 1791, a massive slave revolt sparked a general insurrection against the plantation system and French colonial power. The rebellion developed into both a civil war.
Following the Mexican declaration of war in 1810, protracted fighting erupts cross the country until independence is won in 1821. War leaves Mexico in a state of disorder and deterioration. Mexicans begin building their social and political infrastructure. Central America is a colonial backwater and lags economically and culturally behind other centers,

Dirty War, Spanish Guerra Sucia, also called Process of National Reorganization, Spanish Proceso de Reorganización Nacional or El Proceso, infamous campaign waged from 1976 to 1983. It has been used in different contexts to indicate situations of intervention by the army, paramilitaries, and terrorists in which they confront dissident and opposition political groups in a given country.
Fidel Castro establishes a revolutionary socialist state in Cuba after he and a group of guerrilla fighters successfully revolt against President Fulgencio Batista. Castro nationalizes all foreign assets in Cuba, hikes taxes on U.S. imports, and establishes trade deals with the Soviet Union.
