The Early Atmosphere
-
-
-
-
It is likely that nitrogen was released by the volcanoes too and built up in the atmosphere because it is so unreactive / inert
Polluting the Atmosphere
The Greenhouse Effect
- Greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect are essential to supporting life on Earth
- Without it, on average, it would be 18 degrees colder
- Greenhouse gases absorb heat radiated from the earth
- It is released in all directions
-
-
-
Carbon Footprint
- A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse emitted by a person or population over a certain period of time
-
-
Fossil Fuels Formation
Coal Formation
- Formed when trees in low-lying wetland areas were flooded and burried
- This prevented oxidation from occuring
- Over millions of years they were compressed and heated turning them into coal
Oil Formation
- Formed from simple plants and tiny animals that lived in oceans and lakes
- Organisms died and their remains sank to the bottom
- Their remains were buried under sediment
- This prevented oxidation as there was no oxygen about
- Over millions of years compressing and heating into oil
Gas Formation
- Natural gas is formed in the same way as oil
- Natural gas tends to be found above the oil containing the lightest molecules
- Tends to be trapped under sedimentary rocks
The Modern Atmosphere
It has
-
-
A small amount of other gases e.g water vapour, carbon dioxide, argon
