Redmond pleaded w/ authorities that they should show restraint in aftermath of rebellion, was outraged by actions of insurgents
Dillon directed full fury to government in famous speech in HOC May 11 1916, denouncing secret trials + demanding halt to executions- "fought a clean fight, a brave fight, however misguided...damned good thing for you if your soldiers were able to put up as good a fight as these men"
British response to Rising + Irish reaction
dubbed as Sinn Feinn rebeliion, SF had little to nothing to do w/ it
SF activists arrested, turned them more against Br
2000+ shipped over to dentention centres in England + Wales-came across more radical nationalists,anti-english sentiment
Maxwell (Major-Gen) declared martial law for whole country w/ nightly curfews in Dublin + arrest + dententions w/out trial
15 rebels executed 3-12 May-horror stories abt torture + executions, blood seeping under doors etc
Willie Pearse, executed at 17 for being Pearse's brother, terminally ill Plunkett who married Grace Gifford the night before he was executed, Connolly wounded at GPO + strapped to chair and executed
public's attitude changed, rebels men of honour, dignity, passion,bravery etc=heroes + martyrs, Months Mind masses people from alla reas + classes came to pay respects
Lloyd George Negotiations
Asquith visited Ireland, wanting to solve tensions + remove anti-US sentiment
talks began May 23rd, LG decided to deal w/ Carson + Redmon separately
told Carson that 26 counties would have HR + 6 excluded, may 29 permanent, Redmon agreed to
temporary
exclusion
both leaders agreed on exclusion but not length of time
led to conflict in war-time coaltion w/ Walter Long + Lord Lansdowne-attack on proposal when LG made plans public-split in Conservatives
mid July, LG's duplicity over temporary vs permanent destroyed whole scheme-blow to prestige of IPP
Contest between IPP + SF
despite public opinion changing, IPP still won by-election Nov 1916 in Cork-SF leaders not realised potential yet
interned volunteers released from dentention centres joined SF=party represented advanced, radical PFN
George Plunkett, father of executed Joseph stood practically for SF, had drive passion + energy-old IPP no match
Feb 3rd 1917 Plunkett won 3077 votes + 1708 of IPP
coming together of groups w/ "old" pre rebellion nationalism-IV, Irish Nation League + old SF
power + potential for elections-pressure on BR, discrediting IPP etc, self-determination key planks from WW
dispute over Griffith (founder) + Plunkett, P wanted Liberty League which would work for complete independence-SF main force by 1917
July 1917 SF 11,000 members, October 200,000+ within 1200 clubs across Ireland
SF keen to cement link w/ rising=prisoner McGuinness held in S England was SF candidate 1917- "put him in to get him out"
May 9th, SF won by 37 votes
