Marxist
Ansley - The main reason for oppression in the family is capitalism not men. Women reproduce the workforce, absorb emotional stress and are a reserve force of labour leading to exploitation of women as a class.
Barrett & McIntosh - There is an inequality in the distribution of resources in the family. Male expenditure is usually self-based whereas female spending is distributed between themselves and the children, women are often seen as impoverished.
Benston - Capitalism benefits from an army of women - an unpaid workforce - who are compliant and willing to do as they're told because they've been socialised to act this way.
Radical
Duncombe and Marsden - Women in work having 3 roles - employment, domestic work, emotional work
Greer - All societies are base on patriarchy at a base level. This means that men are the main oppressive force to women, thus she wants separatism between the sexes.
Stanko - fear of crime used to crime used to constrain women from having more active social life. Women have to restrict their behaviour by taking care not to be too provocative in behaviour and appearance.
Liberal
Sommerville - Some feminists perspectives are outdated and women have a lot more freedom now than they did in the past.
General
Dobash and Dobash - Marriage legitimates violence by creating an unequal relationship whereby women become dependent on their husbands and domestic violence occurs as a result of challenges to a man's authority
Delphy and Leonard - men don't take responsibility for housework, instead they take control of finances and key decisions.
Dunne - There is more symmetry in homo couples compared to hetero couples. Heterosexual couples are pressured into gender roles and stereotypes.
Gershuny - Women in full time careers seem to have more equality with their significant others. Wives with careers do less housework and childcare comparatively.
Oakley - She rejects the march of progress theory. Husbands are more likely to help with childcare as opposed to housework. This means that there is inequality in roles at home.
Edgell - found that women were primarily responsible for decisions in 'relatively unimportant' areas i.e decorating, children's clothes, food shopping. Men take responsibility for decisions in 'very important areas'
Pahl and Vogler - the reasons that men dominate decision making and resources is that they are generally the full-time breadwinners.
-
Morris - Found that even in partnerships where only the woman works, their husbands still did less housework than the wives.
Ferri and Smith - Out of a sample of 1,589 parent couples, less than 4% of fathers took the main responsibility for childcare. (approx. 64 couples out of the total sample)
