BACKGROUND: The Pearl, Steinbeck heard the tale in 1940, while he was on the expedition to the Gulf of California described in his Sea of Cortez. He wrote it in its present form shortly afterward and later adapted it as a motion-picture script for a film with an all-Mexican cast which will be released by RKO. The Pearl, which antedates The Wayward Bus in the Steinbeck chronology, was first published in The Woman's Home Companion in December 1945. This is its first appearance in book form.
